Why You Should Help Your Child Play an Instrument
Parents who encourage their children to play a musical instrument help positively shape their lives beyond tone and tenor. They provide them with the opportunity to strengthen the brain and build success in virtually every other aspect of their lives.
A case in point features the results of a three-year partnership between Education Through Music and Metis Associates and the impact musical programming had school attendance, academic performance, and the overall school climate.
A comparative study was conducted between 2021 and 2024 within NYC public schools between ETM schools and those that were similarly matched by demographics and neighborhood composition.
The study revealed the following results.
English Language Arts
ETM schools’ ELA performance was 13-17 percentage points higher than those of non-ETM schools.
Math
ETM outperformed non-ETM schools mathematically by 3-17 percentage points across all three years.
Attendance
ETM schools reported 13-17 percentage points lower absenteeism than the comparison schools across all three years.
A Deeper Dive into Music Study Benefits
While research continues, there is a growing body of evidence that supports the positive connection between learning a musical instrument and the improved mental and emotional health of children.
Music and ELA
A 2015 National Institutes of Health study supports the direct correlation between music and improved ELA scores. The results support the hypothesis that music strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, rhyming skills, auditory processing, and overall cognition.
Music and Math
Research reported in phys.org supports the concept that active participation in learning an instrument offers long-term cognitive benefits, improving math skills in children and adults. However, the article noted that music training was particularly effective with elementary-age children and early math readiness
Music and Absenteeism
A recent Save the Music Foundation article examines how incorporating music into the educational curriculum can positively impact absenteeism in multiple ways:
- Improves a sense of belonging
- Enhances motivation and personal expression
- Supports a greater sense of well-being
The Lifelong Advantages of Learning Music from a Personal Instructor
The initial benefits of studying music with a personal instructor, such as a customized curriculum and immediate feedback, evolve into valuable lifelong advantages.
Cognitive Benefits
Individuals who begin studying music as children improve memory retention, develop organizational skills, and enhance auditory processing and pattern recognition necessary for language development and reading.
Personal Development
Regularly scheduled lessons that are tailored to the student’s needs foster self-discipline by teaching that success is achieved through continued effort. Improved skill development through one-on-one musical instruction reduces anxiety while building self-esteem.
Technical Competence
A dedicated personal instructor catches mistakes and corrects them before they become bad habits. Individualized training also allows personalized focus on the genres and techniques that matter most to the individual, fostering greater appreciation for and comprehension of music theory.
Social Skills
At some point in the musical development journey, the student will surely join others and combine talents through ensembles, bands, and other performance opportunities. Musicians learn collaboration and teamwork through a shared goal.
Recognizing verbal and nonverbal cues through active listening, intonational shifts, and directorial guidance enhance communication skills and personal interactions with others.
Is There a Specific Age Children Should Begin Learning a Musical Instrument?
While there’s not a definitive age to begin music lessons, children between the ages of 5 and 7 typically have greater success with focus and dexterity than younger students. The following is very general guidance for the ages one might consider for the different types of musical training or instruments.
- Ages 3-4: Music introduction through singing and movement
- Ages 4-5: Beginning piano or violin lessons
- Ages 6-7: Voice, drums and most other instruments
- Ages 7-9: Band instruments, such as clarinet, flute, and guitar
